Oil spill in the Yumurí-201 well in MatanzasAn oil spill was reported on Wednesday in the Yumurí-201 well, on the north coast of the western Cuban province of Matanzas.

Matanzas, Cuba.- Local Yumurí TV channel reported that some 15 thousand litters were spilled.

Forces from different companies and the Ministry of the Interior worked to contain the fossil fuel leak.

Specialists injected seawater into the hole to control the upwelling. The damage is only evident in the adjacent areas without the so-called 'black gold' having reached the sea, the Yumurí TV said.

Nelvis Gómez, an official from the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment (CITMA) in Matanzas province, explained that pressure changes during the oil well maintenance caused the incident.

Gómez commented that the causes of the pressure change in the well, the failure to control it, and the spill's impact on the environment are still to be determined. (RHC)
