Unfavorable environmental conditions are combined with the defective state of the fishing gear and the fuel deficit.

As the experts had warned, climate change is making its effects felt in the economy and threatens to complicate the already difficult challenge of guaranteeing food. In Las Tunas, the variation of the ecosystems affects the fish and their habitats, which translates into a decrease in catch levels.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- José Abelardo Álvarez Molina, director of the Puerto Padre Fishing base business unit, in the northern municipality, assured the press that the increase in the temperature of the Atlantic Ocean is currently affecting the capture of the bar jack, with a negative balance for the economic activity and the availability for consumers.

Denia Castillo Maíllo, director-general of the Fishing Company (PESCATUN), expressed her concern about shellfish reserves in the Puerto Manatí area, the main exportable item of the sector in that territory, which could also be affected by climatic variations.

The entity works together with the University of Las Tunas and the Center for Fisheries Research to adopt strategies that ensure the sustainability of its work, put into practice scientific knowledge committed to resilience, and achieve larger production; as well as make rational use of natural, human, and technological resources.

PESCATUN executives assure that from this union, which is beginning to consolidate knowledge, a concrete plan will emerge to adapt to the current times and vary behaviors in pursuit of a better production process.

In the province, the unfavorable environmental conditions are combined with the defective state of the fishing gear and the fuel deficit, which makes it difficult to navigate more and reach greater depths.
