35th anniversary of the Urban, Suburban, and Family Agricuture Program

Some 730 hectares were part of the Urban, Suburban, and Family Agriculture Movement (AUSF) in the province of Las Tunas at the end of 2022 and this extension represents an increase of more than 129 hectares, compared to the previous year.

35th anniversary of the Urban, Suburban, and Family Agricuture ProgramLas Tunas, Cuba.- The implementation of the new areas in the eight municipalities is the main contribution of the workers and leaders of the activity to the national program, promoted by Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this December 27.

Some are satisfied, and others dissatisfied; for more than three decades the residents of the territory have participated in the intense work in the 101 organoponic, 29 semi-protected cultivation houses, 142 intensive orchards, 187 technical plots, and 10 rustic cultivation houses.

In these units, 22 subprograms are developed: five for crops, 12 for support, and 5 for animal breeding, all of which are part of the National Plan for Food Sovereignty and Nutritional Education, whose challenge is to promote local agricultural systems.

Incidentally, progress has been made in the construction of 19 new organoponic, eight of which correspond to communities. Besides, 37 work centers have set up small units with local resources, and the number could increase in the coming months.

The province has the potential to incorporate about 80 thousand yards and plots, of which 75,241 are already being used thanks to the coordinated work with the mass organizations. In these scenarios, the fundamental productions are vegetables, ornamental and medicinal plants, bananas, fruits, and raising pigs, rabbits, and poultry.

During most of the year, the production and application of organic fertilizers were affected by the lack of fuel to transport the raw material to the processing centers, and from there to the production units.

Although it is not yet what is required, results can be seen in the seed guarantee, while greater support is needed in the municipalities of Jobabo, Manatí, and Colombia. The subprograms for the production of biological control agents and medicinal plants are also making progress.

Since its creation 35 years ago, the value of this project is confirmed in its eagerness to take advantage of all possible areas to produce vegetables, fresh condiments, and other items, on which the physical and economic health of families also depends.
