Some 15 people have died in 2023 in Las Tunas as a consequence of traffic accidents.

The 220 traffic accidents that have occurred in the province of Las Tunas so far this year clearly show how much remains to be done to avoid these unfortunate events, which in 2023 have caused the death of 15 people, four more than in the same period of the previous calendar year.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- It is true that accidents have decreased by 67 compared to 2022, as well as the number of injured people in general, but the number of deaths shows the seriousness of these acts, and above all, they bring sorrow to the Tunas family for completely avoidable causes, because they depend on the actions of the people: not paying due attention to the driving of the vehicle, the violation of the right of way and improper overtaking.

According to Captain José Enrique Collazo González, head of the provincial traffic unit in Las Tunas, technical faults in vehicles were a minority, so almost all accidents were completely avoidable if it were not for road indiscipline, which has been the main problem up to the end of July.

"Unlicensed drivers have been an important factor in the accident rate, mainly mopeds and motorbikes," says Captain Collazo. For this reason - he assures - there is a campaign to confront this indiscipline with severe measures, from official warnings to fines of two thousand to five thousand pesos; the circulation of vehicles that have them is also withheld for six months to a year, and in the same time mopeds and motorbikes (the main means of transport involved) will be withheld, and if violations continue, the means of transport can be confiscated.

According to the head of the provincial traffic unit in Las Tunas, Law 109 defines that when a person in charge of a vehicle allows another to drive it without a license, he or she is just as responsible as the driver is and must be held accountable.

Regarding the learning area in the city of Las Tunas, it is located in the Velázquez distribution area, and once applicants for the license have a permit from the traffic school, they can practice with a tutor with three years of driving experience.

The Transit authorities in the province are also reinforcing their vigilance and rigor with the transportation of holidaymakers to the north coast, with well-defined measures for passenger and administrative vehicles.
