Farmers of Las Tunas mark the upcoming anniversary of the Peasant Congress in Arms.

Several activities are taking place these days in the province of Las Tunas to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Peasant Congress in Armas, in which the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP by its acronym in Spanish) is playing a leading role.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Roberto Medrano Ledesma, president of ANAP in the territory, informed that the 160 grassroots organizations have designed a program of social and economic activities without neglecting food production, the main mission of the associates.

He indicated that, in this third and final stage of the action plan, several indicators are being consolidated in the eight municipalities of Tunisia, especially the incorporation of new usufructuaries of idle land, which are linked to agricultural production cooperatives (CPA in Spanish) or credit and service cooperatives (CCS in Spanish).

Medrano Ledesma added that the FMC-ANAP brigades are also being strengthened, with an important impact on rural communities, especially in the attention to educational centers, television rooms, social circles, and medical clinics.

He added that they make voluntary blood donations, complete layettes for newborns, and organize free deliveries of agricultural products to schools, hospitals, children's circles, maternity and old people's homes, among other entities.

On 21 September 1958, presided over by the then commander of the Rebel Army, Raúl Castro Ruz, the Peasant Congress in Arms was held, which laid the foundations for the enactment of the first Agrarian Reform Law and the handing over of land to those who made it produce.

Since then, almost 65 years have passed and the cooperative and peasant sector in Las Tunas remains active in the dignification of the settlements and the production of more than 80 percent of milk, meat, viands, vegetables, and fruits, among other items.
