563 lay judges were selected in Las Tunas

All the pre-candidates for lay judges, including those of the Military Court, presented to the municipal assemblies of the People’s Power in Las Tunas received the approval of the delegates and have already taken possession of their posts, as reported Dagmara Peña Sánchez, a member of the Provincial Secretariat of the Cuban Central Workers Union (CTC), the leading organization of the process that began in September 2023.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- After this step, those proposed begin to fulfill the task of administering justice for five years, as established by the Constitution of the Republic of Cuba, in the corresponding instances of the Popular Courts of the province, a mission that they exercise without legal ownership but with equal rights and duties as professional judges, said Peña Sánchez.

In this way, Las Tunas complied with the instructions of the labor in the election of the pre-candidates for this high responsibility among workers, peasants, members of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, the Federation of Cuban Women, and the Federation of University Students, as a symbol of the participatory democracy in an exercise of great social responsibility.

Peña Sánchez, head of the Labor and Social Affairs department, explained that 563 lay judges were selected, including four from the Supreme Court, of which 198 were ratified and the remaining 365 are serving for the first time.

The election was based on the principle of voluntariness, and it was considered that those proposed also met the conditions and possibilities of assuming this commission.
