Artesanías Vargas recovers and manufactures colonial slabs

The recovery and manufacture of colonial slabs is today a premise for Artesanías Vargas, a new project in the province of Las Tunas that consolidates its growth in the possibility of substituting imports and entering the international trade.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- This was confirmed exclusively to the Cuban News Agency by Silvestre Narciso Vargas Ramírez, a leader of this new undertaking, who explained that from a series of conferences with the Holguín Chamber of Commerce and during the 10th Business Round, held in Las Tunas last December, these intentions were declared as part of the country's economic strategy and the Ordering Task.

Artesanías Vargas and three other projects were selected from more than 60 exhibitions to contribute - as protagonists of quality management and high economic value - to the development of the province and the country, he pointed out.

Vargas Ramírez also stressed that relations were already established, based on these projections, with the NOLLA Mosaic Group; this is one of the most renowned in Europe, which maintains a recognized experience in the recovery of slabs as a very economic alternative, and with high patrimonial value.

Artesanías Vargas give life back to the colonial slabs of the Bahía del Almirante Hotel, in the municipality of Gibara, Holguín, during the restoration of that property, whose construction dates back to 1905.

The manufacture or rescue of colonial slabs requires two processes, he added, the realization of the metal mold that is carried out entirely by hand and, then, the assembly and casting process; learning that has allowed this project of the non-state sector in Las Tunas have - little by little, and despite being very young - more than 50 molds, many of them from the mid-19 century.

The working group has already had experiences in the hotels “Saratoga,” in the city of Holguín; “Plaza Colón” and “Ocio Club,” in Gibara; “Telégrafo,” in Granma; and “Palacio Arenas,” in Villa Clara, among other works of marked historical and cultural importance.

Despite the current limitations with raw materials, Artesanías Vargas has already established the route of strengthening and developing its productions, as one of the alternatives for this eastern Cuban province to grow the substitution of imports and the search for exportable funds.
