José Martí Plaza

One of the most recurrent, but also one of the most symbolic places in Las Tunas is undoubtedly the Plaza Martiana (José Martí Plaza), a symbol of respect and pride of the children of this land for the most universal of all Cubans: José Julián Martí Pérez.

Las Tunas, Cuba.-There, right in the heart of the Balcón del Oriente Cubano, an everlasting homage accompanies the "Maestro" who watches over the comings and goings of locals and visitors, from the bust sculpted in bronze by the sculptor Rita Alonga. Every May 19th, commemorating the National Hero's fall in combat, this image is illuminated thanks to the creative ingenuity of the architect Domingo Alás Rossel, its designer.

Precisely positioned, the work allows the sun's rays to fall on the mask that stands on one of the five star-shaped hyperbolic paraboloids of the monument, which stealthily embraces the slenderness of a royal palm.

The site brings together concepts of solar architecture and a collection of artistic works in murals and monuments allegorical to historical events, personalities, and phrases. Among them is the solar calendar with a metal band that marks more than 60 events and places of importance in the life of José Martí.

Precisely on the ground that once served as the foundation of the house where Juan Cristóbal Nápoles Fajardo -El Cucalambé- was born, the Plaza Martiana elegantly encompasses details that immortalize the Apostle's imprint. It is an important historical and cultural space that has witnessed the events of Las Tunas for 28 years, since its inauguration on 25 March 1995.

But also, from one of the perimeters of the building, the monument to Ángel de la Guardia Bello, a figure that history recognizes as the only witness to the death of José Martí, accompanies the architectural complex, erected by the plastic artist Rogelio Ricardo Fuentes precisely in the place where he fell in combat during the capture of Las Tunas in 1897, at the age of 22.

This place is a perpetual remembrance of the memory of the man whose light illuminates the path of the homeland; it is the eternal honor of love and respect, in a city that embraces him to eternity.
