Yillian, 15 years old, went to the Doctor Ernesto Guevara de la Serna General Teaching Hospital with aggravated high blood pressure, 38 weeks of pregnancy. After an urgent cesarean section, several surgeries followed due to bleeding and intra-abdominal infection, which led to surgical repair of the organic area. For many days, she had total respiratory, hemodynamic and renal artificial support.
Las Tunas, Cuba.- “We are talking about an extremely complex patient to treat, due to the clinical situation with which she arrived at the intensive services of the hospital: a hypertensive gravid disease, already with significant kidney complications, which even led to a dialysis machine for kidney replacement therapy."
"To this were added several complications in his puerperium, which required urgent surgeries, multiple reinterventions -nine in total-, which worsened his health and made management more complex from a medical point of view," emphasizes Dr. Jaime Ernesto Julián Rey, one of the Intensive Care specialists most closely linked to this case.
Due to the expertise of a multidisciplinary medical team from the healthcare center, which was joined with dedication by specialists from pediatric intensive and surgical services, the adolescent mother has achieved her gradual recovery in the “Guevara” Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
“We are very satisfied with the result obtained. Actually, the success is collective, both surgeons, obstetricians, pediatric intensivists and the intensivists of our service who were tirelessly watching over her. It is an achievement that speaks in favor of the quality of our Health System," the doctor added.
More than 40 days of hospitalization have elapsed since Yillian Cobiella Rodríguez was in extreme danger. “She has demanded the union of many professionals from our hospital. We have been fortunate to have shared knowledge with the pediatric team, which has been complement in the care with the contribution of multiple specialists, assuming correct protocols for this specific case. Today we show the results: the recovery of the patient, who had a critical state of health."
“We must also add cutting-edge specialties in the treatment of adolescent mothers –together with Obstetrics, Pediatrics and Intensive Care-, such as Nephrology, Hematology, Surgery, Cardiology, Angiology and nutritionists. It is very comforting to see the union of all these disciplines for a common goal: to save the patient," shares Dr. Lázaro Pérez Escribano, head of the Emergency Center.
Yoancel David, Yillian's son, in perfect health, waits safely for his mother's recovery in the Neonatology room of the health institution itself.
“We are enjoying the restored health of the mother. As for her baby, the state was never compromised at birth, but it occupies our full attention just because she is away from her mother. We can also feel satisfied that soon she will accompany her son,” Dr. Repi Balmaseda Bruzón, deputy director of the Maternal and Child Program at the provincial hospital, says.
Yillian is of few words, but she knows how to appreciate the greatness of the human work that has saved her. “They have treated me very well, all these doctors! I thank you for bringing me back to life."
Severe preeclampsia, according to experts, is one of the most frequent complications during adolescent pregnancy. Yillian, with her satisfactory evolution, and thanks to Cuban Medical Sciences, smiles today, and to the future.
