Leñadores' flagging ceremony

The flag ceremony of Las Tunas team to the 60th National Baseball Series was held Thursday at its home, the Julio Antonio Mella Stadium, a season dedicated to the six decades of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution and the Federation of Cuban Women. 

Las Tunas, Cuba.- The president of the Provincial Defense Council, Manuel René Pérez Gallego, in the presence of the vice president of that body, Jaime Ernesto Chiang Vega, delivered the banner that the Leñadores (Lumberjacks) will defend throughout the competition. The captain of the team, Yosvany Alarcón, escorted by internationals Yudiel Rodríguez and Yuniesky Larduet, received the flag with the promise of maintaining the path of dedication and competitiveness that has made Las Tunas the only team in the country with a presence on the podium the last three campaigns.

Compliance with the sanitary measures is a priority for Las Tunas' teamThe outfielder Andrés Quiala Herrera spoke on behalf of his teammates and reaffirmed the will to live up to the moment the country is living, complying with all the sanitary measures to be able to develop the championship in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Quiala Herrera spoke of "values" and of "tenacity to defend the colors of our jersey, in addition to staying in the elite of Cuban baseball, with discipline on and off the field."

"Every pitch, every hit and every run will be aimed to fill with joy our fans, our people, who deserve the maximum for their unconditional support of baseball," added the player.

The manager Pablo Alberto Civil Espinosa then delivered the oath of the athletes to the highest authorities of the province, a symbolic gesture that seals the commitment of a group of players who have starred in the golden age of as Tunas baseball, crowned with the title achieved in the 58th Series.

In return, Pérez Gallego and Chiang Vega presented a banner of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, an image that will accompany the team throughout the new national campaign.

Even with the restrictions and the essential physical distancing, there was a representation at the event of the medical personnel who have fought for several months against the new coronavirus, including some members of the Henry Reeve International Contingent, who recently provided internationalist collaboration in several countries. Likewise, members of CDRs and the FMC with outstanding work attended.

During the flagging ceremony, the green-red squad wore their colorful home uniform, white with green and red trim and with the nickname “Leñadores” (Lumberjacks) on the chest.
