Amparo Álvarez

There are a lot of solidarity expressions these days in Cuba related to citizens accustomed to the noble gesture of serving others on an island that is characterized for its humanism.

Las Tunas, Cuba - An example is Amparo Álvarez, from Amancio municipality, who has transformed the kitchen of her house into a small clothing workshop. Since the sun comes up, before the first cup of coffee. She is already immersed in her mission of producing masks, not only for her family, but also for the neighbors and workers of the nearby labor collectives.

Amparo Álvarez Amparo says that today the country needs everyone, and that is her contribution to guaranteeing health and avoiding contagion with the new coronavirus that is sweeping the world.

“I am retired, I am 80 years old, but you know how we Cubans are, we have to take the step forward whenever there is a need; and if the Revolution requires it, we are there for anything”, she says with the joviality and dynamism that characterizes her.

Searching among the cloth clippings that have the appropriate size and with the collaboration of the neighbors, she continues her work. She has already made more than 100 of them.

She always explained to them that they should not wear them for more than three hours, and when they get wet they should be removed properly; wash them well with plenty of soap and water, and iron them to kill any germs. “I learned that from the TV and radio because it is very important today to be aware of what is happening to comply with the measures,” she said.

That is Amparo Álvarez, a woman who is recognized for her solidarity and dedication. Just like her, others from every neighborhood are joining in to guarantee tranquility and well-being, a way of combating the spread of COVID-19.
