Tropical storm Laura

Las Tunas province awaits the scourge of Tropical Storm Laura, already in the cyclonic alarm phase, decreed this Sunday at 10:00 in the morning by the National Civil Defense Staff. From its official Twitter account, the agency specified that the alarm also applies to the rest of the eastern provinces; while the territories from Ciego de Ávila to Villa Clara go to the cyclonic alert phase.

Las Tunas.- During the midday and early afternoon, “Laura” has increased cloudy with heavy rains around its center and is very close to the eastern region of Cuba. At three in the afternoon, its center was estimated at 19.5 degrees north latitude and 74.6 degrees west longitude, a position that places it about 100 kilometers south-southwest of Maisí Point, Guantánamo, and 140 kilometers east-southeast from the city of Santiago de Cuba.

The Weather Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology also said that the tropical storm continues its rapid west-northwest movement with a westward trend, at 33 kilometers per hour (21 mph). The strength of its maximum sustained winds is still 85 kilometers per hour (50 mph), with higher gusts, and the central pressure has continued at 1004 hectoPascal.

Tropical Storm Laura will continue moving with a similar speed of translation through the seas adjacent to the southeastern coast, where it could gain a little more in its organization, just before penetrating the southern coast between Santiago de Cuba and Granma in the afternoon-evening of today.

"Cloudy and heavy rains are increasing in Guantánamo and will spread to the rest of the eastern region in the afternoon and evening, which will be strong and intense in some localities, mainly in mountainous areas."

“The strong swells will continue on both coasts of the eastern region, with the onset of light to moderate coastal flooding in the afternoon in low-lying areas of the northern coast of the provinces of Guantánamo, Holguín, Las Tunas and Camagüey. From Cape Cruz to Maisí Point, there will be light coastal flooding from the afternoon, and during the next morning light to moderate coastal flooding will begin on the south coast of Las Tunas,” concludes the Tropical Cyclone Advisory issued at 3:00 this afternoon.
