José Martí Cultural Society

Bringing university students closer to the National Hero José Martí, and doing so from a novel and practical vision, is the objective of the joint work developed by the Cultural Society that honors the Apostle and the University of Las Tunas.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- On the occasion of the 168th anniversary of the birth of the architect of the Necessary War, Dagneris Batista de los Ríos, executive secretary of the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), highlighted that the cohesive work transversals the different processes of the educational institution and achieves profitable results, for example, in the Amateur Artists Movement.

"Such a common effort passes through the academic, research, and extension works, in which the bidirectional relationship between the Society and the University stands out; which allows the Master's thought to be put into practice through projects such as the students' artistic movement, and the work of the honorary chair with emphasis on Martí and the one devoted to the thought and work of Fidel Castro, the also head of the Department of University Extension said.

A work that extends to the entire provincial territory, without age limits, as the work with some 500 older adults shows, who, in this way, approach the thought and work of the Hero of Dos Ríos.

This task made it possible for Eduardo Torres Cuevas, president of the José Martí Cultural Society in the country, to give the institution the recognition Por la Utilidad de la Virtud (For the Utility of Virtue) in November 2020, professor Dagneris explained and also recalled the visit to the institution of scholars of the work of Martí, like intellectuals Abel Prieto and Yosuam Palacios Ortega.

Batista de los Ríos, stressed that the National Hero of Cuba is a benchmark of patriotism and ethics for students and teachers of Las Tunas, and for Cubans in general.

In her words, she recalled Martí's sentence: "Doing is the only effective way to oppose those who do not do it. Doing is the only effective way to respond. Do each one his part of duty and no one will be able to defeat us."

In this regard, she said, "the transcendental thing is that each one does what corresponds to in the current historical moment and that we add our young people every day to this work that we have ahead; first of all, in the confrontation with subversion, the pandemic, but above all in quality training.

"If we can train competent and loving professionals, I think it would be the most effective way to ensure that the new generations have a better world as the Commander in Chief taught us; we know that it is possible."
