The Las Tunas Poultry Company has undertaken an investment plan for two years to achieve an increase in egg production rates and gradually achieve self-sufficiency in the demanded product.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Pedro Calero García, director-general of the entity, said that the previous year's investments meant an accelerated step in this purpose. “The new facilities built made it possible to increase the number of hens per unit, which contributed to the fact that of the 19 million eggs that are imported annually from other territories, only 11 million were brought.

Likewise, the manager affirmed that, if the construction process continues at a favorable pace, the new premises will reach 70 million eggs this year, which is the current basic demand; while by 2022, the plan should grow with more than 27 million and, with this, reach in the province close to 100 million.

In the northern municipality of Puerto Padre, specifically in the Bazarales area, six new warehouses with semi-mechanized technology are to be built. The objective, says the manager, "will be to use the machinery to collect the excreta and distribute the feed to the birds, only the collection of the egg will be without intelligent mechanisms."

With a sustained efficiency, and recognized as the third-best Cuban Company of its kind, the projections of this entity seek a higher development index not only in egg production but also in other poultry programs.

This is how the raising fattening chicken develops with very good results. "In these first months of the year - reports the source - more than 60 thousand of approximately 1.9 kilograms of average weight have already been sacrificed.

"In this sense, we intend, in the short term, the recovery of two buildings for the raising of the heavy breeder in the Ceba-2 base business unit (UEB), and another 10 for the raising of free-range chicken in the UEB Emilio González. Also, increase non-specialized breeders in the production of and free-range chicken and fattening meat,” Calero García said.

The construction of a slaughterhouse stands out among the proposals. Previously, the sacrifice of these animals was done in other areas; however, "the first efforts are already underway to have one in its own territory." Undoubtedly, this would bring many benefits, not only in terms of saving fuel and other resources; but also higher quality and safety of productions.

Other horizons are broadened with the productive chain. Linked with international projects and various organizations in the province, Las Tunas Poultry directs its efforts towards diversification. “Now we want to increase the production of charcoal for heating poultry, cooking food, and exporting. Another objective will also be to use renewable energies to the maximum, recover the existing biogas, and construct another 12 biodigesters.

"Only in this way, we will achieve a higher productivity rate with the development of innovative ideas and effective tools to implement them, on which the future of our progress depends," the director concluded.
