Leñadores de Las Tunas made it to the finals of the Caribbean Series, after defeating Venezuela's Cardenales de Lara 3-0, at the Rod Carew stadium in the Panamanian capital.
Despite the sad paradox of winning 9-4 to the Cardinals of Lara and still be eliminated, the Charros de Jalisco made one last favor o the Leñadores de Las Tunas on Friday, leaving in the hands of the team led by Pablo Civil the possibility of getting their advance to the final of the 61st Caribbean Baseball Series, which will conclude this Sunday in Panama City.
The Cuban team of Las Tunas Leñadores lost for second consecutive day, this time 2-3 to the Mexico´s Jalisco Charros, result that almost took them out of the final of the 61st Caribbean Series based at Rod Carew Stadium, in Panama City.
Havana, Cuba.- As in the first two games, the Cuban offensive continued silenced, since they only produced six hits, three of them to the account of 1B Yordanis Samón, in eleven innings.
The Charros took the lead in the very first frame by scoring once off Cuban starting pitcher Yariel Rodríguez, who allowed one run, with two hits and a wild-pitch in only a third of an inning.
But then, the Leñadores managed to score twice in the bottom of that frame thanks to an error by SS Amadeo Zazueta and two consecutive doubles by DH Frederich Cepeda and LF Alfredo Despaigne.
RHP Vladimir García starred an amazing relief of 6.2 innings allowing only one unearned run and four hits, but his teammates didn´t support him, nor offensively or defensively, as 3B Yurisbel Gracial made an error that caused the tying run and also failed on several occasions with runners in scoring position.
The decision came in the 11th act when Cuban-born LF Dariel Álvarez was struck out but reached first base due to a wild-pitch by lefty reliever Liván Moinello, advanced to second by sacri-bunt by pinch hitter Carlos Figueroa and then scored propelled by an RBI-single of 2B Ramon Ríos.
Moinello took the loss while veteran closer Sergio Romo earned the win after retiring the eight batters he faced, including three strikeouts.
CF and lead-off hitter Alonso Harris offensively highlighted for the winning side when hitting 3 for 4 with two runs scored and one steal.
This is Cuba´s second loss and they must now wait to see what happens in the match between the Charros and the Lara Cardenales, from Venezuela, leader of group A as remain undefeated in two outings.
If winning, they would advance to the final against the winner of Pool B, as they would be unattainable to Mexicans and Cubans, who now have a both balance of 1-2. If losing, then Cuba would have to beat them on Saturday to provoke a three-way tie, all with 2-2 balance. (acn)
