MEP Manu Pineda, a member of the Left Group in the European Parliament, considered that the People's Summit scheduled for this month is an opportunity to ratify that nations of Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe want peace and sovereignty, not submission to the United States.
Brussels.- “We have been working on an ambitious agenda for months and we are confident in its success and in the objective of strengthening the ties that unite us,” he told Prensa Latina regarding the forum, which will meet on July 17th and 18th in parallel to the Summit of the European Union and Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
Pineda stressed that the meeting represents a space for social, political, cultural, and union organizations from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean to work together to face the challenges of humanity without any subordination to Washington.
“It represents a very important forum because it shows that there is another way of understanding the world, that the peoples of Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe want peace and sovereignty and not submission to US dictates,” he said.
According to the official, the fact that Latin America and the Caribbean constitute a region of peace, as declared in 2014 during the CELAC summit in Havana, deserves particular mention. “Europe must also move in that direction, it is urgent that war stops being fueled, and that the prevailing geopolitical escalation be abandoned,” he stressed.
According to Pineda, the Summit of the Peoples in Brussels will constitute a meeting point to share experiences of struggle and resistance.
He expressed the opinion that the success of the Alternative Summit is guaranteed, based on “the extremely high attendance that we have already confirmed. (…) The work is arduous during these previous days, especially to finalize details, but we are optimistic and we are looking forward to the moment,” he said. (PL)
